Borbón

Borbón is located in the natural reserve Cayapas-Mataje in the province of Esmeraldas which is in the north of Ecuador on the coast of the pacific ocean. The main part of the reserve consists of a mangrove forest. Besides the mangroves you can also find arms of the ocean, swamps, dry woods and the coastal area in Cayapas-Mataje. Their connection forms a special and unique ecosystem. The natural reserve is home for a large biodiversity, that is especially distinguished by its strong saltwater tolerance.

The people of  Borbón are mainly of African origin.

The situation in the reserve today

Destruction of the local ecosystem

- Tons of tropical woods are removed every day
- In about 15 years there will be no reserve of timber left in Esmeraldas
- Threatening of the foundation of the lives of the local people
- Endangering the lives of many different local species
- Over 70 percent of the original mangrove reserve have already been destroyed
- Industrial prawn raisers, working to export to the USA and to Europe, play a big part in the deforestation.
